Mac Youth Quest 2010

The Top Engineer

This competition has two versions “The Top Engineer I” and “The Top Engineer II”.  Please go to the chapter page to find out which version of the “The Top Engineer” will be running in your city:

Description of The Top Engineer I:

The goal of this project is to build a Frisbee launcher that will launch a standard a Frisbee (Frisbee to be purchased by contestants) through a square frame whose dimensions are 1m x 1m.  The materials that you are allowed to use must be strictly mechanical.  Electrical devices such as motors are not allowed.  Here are some of the materials you can use:

-                  Wood

-                  Springs

-                  Elastic Bands and any Kind of Rubber material

-                  Glue, Nails, Tape, etc.

The Dimensions of your launcher must not exceed 70cm L x 70 cm W x 70 cm H.

Competition Rules:

Each launcher must be build by 1-2 people only.  On the day of the competition your launchers will be placed at a distance of 10 metres away from the target.  The launcher can be placed on a desk and therefore your launcher doesn’t have to have legs to support it.  You will be allowed to launch 10 frisbees.  For each frisbee that goes through the square frame (even if it hits the frame first) will get 10 points.  The top 6 scores will advance to the second round.  In the second round each person will also get to launch 10 frisbees with the same scoring system.  The top 3 scores will advance to round 3 (the final round).  This time the launchers will be placed at a distance of 15 m away from the target.  The same scoring system applies.  The person with the most points is the winner.

Tie Breakers:

In case there is a tie in any of the rounds the tie should be broken by allowing the tied individuals to take two shots each.  If they tie again then take another two shots and so on until the tie is resolved.

Note: All competitors must use the frisbees provided to them during the competition and cannot use their personal frisbees.

Description of The Top Engineer II:

This is a team based competition in which teams will be assigned kits to build robots.  These robots will eventually battle each other to determine a winner.

For each round of the contest, two robots will be matched by random drawing for each game, so that at the end of the round each robot will have a recorded Win or Loss. Robots with a total of two Losses will be removed from next round and the contest. Rounds are played until only one robot remains: the Winner.

Restrictions:

Teams are to construct their robots using the kits provided only.  They may not add any additional materials.  Outside sources may not be consulted.  Only students entered on the team and their mentor may assist in the construction of the robot.

All entries in part two of the competition must be solely controlled by their remote controls.  There can be no human intervention once the game begins. A robot that is touched by a team member during a game will be disqualified for that round. Also, team members interfering with the game area in any way during play risk disqualification of their robot.

Teams may qualify only one robot, and only that robot may play in the final round.

Contestants may not alter the essential structure of their entry, or add/subtract significant parts, once the competition has begun, but may repair broken components between rounds if time permits.

No adhesives or sticky substances (such as on tape) may be applied to any part of the game board or to a game piece (ball, block, goal, other robot, etc.)

Any machine that appears to be a safety hazard will be disqualified from the competition.

Robot Structure Rules:

Your robot must be constructed using the parts in your kit.  All kits contain exactly the same components.

Judging Rules:

  • Contestants should ask the instructor about possible designs or strategies that may be questionable under any of the rules.
  • The judges may alter or eliminate any rule, or add rules, at any time.
  • The judges will decide any discrepancies in the contest play.
  • All decisions of the judges are final.
